5 ways to go from content overwhelm to story power!

Stories from Home January 2022 (Smaller)-106

Running a business and writing all the words to keep the wheels turning can feel EXHAUSTING.

If you're feeling overwhelmed and in a content spin, here are five tips to help make it easy:

1. Just start

You might think just doing it is easier said than done, but trust us, staring at a blank page trying to write a great sales page, blog post, newsletter, whatever, can be intimidating. So just start, let it be messy. It does not have to be perfect. Just start and then grow from there.

Start with ideas. Grab a notebook or open a Google doc - however you like to work - and map out your ideas with your audience in mind. What do they need to hear from you right now? Remember, it's not actually about you, it's about them.

What do they want, need or desire? How do they want to feel? How are you the solution and how can you serve them? Where are they now and where do they want to be? Don’t think too hard, just write.

Struggling? Ask your audience (it's content gold).

2. Be intentional

Magic happens when we put purpose into our words. So the secret to story success isn’t quantity, it’s intention.

Your aim is to create intentional copy that hits the spot with your dream audience, capturing hearts and inspiring action. So with every piece of content think about it's purpose - what's the goal with this newsletter / blog post / sales page / product description? What action do you want these words to inspire?

3. Repeat and repurpose

One of the biggest mistakes we see? When every piece of content is created in isolation rather than fusing it with the business strategy - the roadmap to achieving the big vision.

When you create with intention you can repurpose your words again and again. The key here is repetition, repeating and repurposing key messages. This is also known as evergreen copy - writing for all seasons - which can then be chunked down, with each paragraph or quote ready to be used as a social post.

4. Be a storyteller

Your stories are stronger than you think and the truth is, we all have lots of them. When you sit down to write some content, don’t see it as ‘I have to write something,’ see it as your opportunity to tell the world why they need you and what you have to offer. Be brave, be bold.

Stories give us the opportunity to connect and take the reader on a journey. Stories can be subtle, they can be clever, funny, have plot twists. But often the best ones have a simple but meaningful narrative. Add your stories, musings or antidotes to your notebook or Google doc.

Think about how you can use these experiences to create awareness, trust and connection with your audience. Once you've started and broken the seal, you’ll soon notice stories and take inspiration from all around you.

5. Get support

Being a creative or small business owner can be a lonely business. We know it gets easier when we get support but often that only extends to an accountant because we're conscious of spending too much when we're growing a business.

That's why we created The Copy Edit Club. A monthly membership club giving small business owners the clarity, confidence and connection they need to go from content overwhelm or not knowing where to start to story power.

A sustainable approach to copywriting, members of The Copy Edit Club will learn the skills to write copy that connects authentically with your audience, without a hefty invoice. All while being part of a motivating group of female founders looking to level up their language and call in the next level of their business.

If you're feeling the pull, we'd love to welcome to you to The Club. Join here

Gabrielle Bernstein

I discovered Gabrielle Bernstein last summer, inhaling her book The Universe has got your back while on holiday in France. Since then I've literally read her entire repertoire. I can't get enough of her positivity and make picking an affirmation card the first task of my day.

Marie Forleo

I discovered Marie Forleo at the end of 2019 and devoured her book Everything is Figureoutable in a day. I love her New Jersey no nonsense approach to problem solving and how she's all about the fun. Because we all need more of that.

Mountains

Mountains, I love 'em. I love looking at them, hiking them and the endless possibilities they hold. Our favourite place to explore in the UK is the Lake District, whenever we have a spare weekend or day, we throw the tent in the car and head to the hills.

Binge the latest blog posts

Writing isn't hard. Getting out of your own way to make it happen makes it hard. Here's 4 things which will help you get out of your own way to stop sabotaging your writing and your business.

By embracing your authenticity and speaking directly to your ideal audience, you’re not only more likely to attract those who genuinely connect with your message, but also cultivate a stronger and more meaningful relationship with them.

Whether you're already embracing the resurgence of blogs or have yet to consider adding one to your website, this post is going to show you why this juicy format of content creation packs a punch.

Your story blueprint is as unique as your DNA. It’s why we bang on about the importance of story so much. The importance of weaving it into your messaging and content so your audience gets to KNOW, LIKE and TRUST you.

No matter where you’re at with your business - whether you have a seed of an idea or you’ve been running for years - taking a moment to go back to your foundations and get clear on your mission and values - your purpose - will help you approach your messaging with renewed focus to propel you in the right direction with every piece of content you write.

Often one of the first things our clients tell us is they don’t have an interesting story. They also can't succinctly articulate what it is they do, and more importantly what their unique super power is. But five minutes into the call, they’ve already told us story gold, they just couldn’t see it.
