You already have the golden words

Stories from Home Social + Web UC-217

What if I told you some of the most important words you need to tell the world (your dream audience) about your business, are words you didn't even write?

And then what if I showed you the simple way to reuse those words to write copy with ease and confidence?

Pretty good, right? Well, here's the thing, I'm going to tell you right now so read on 'cos this top tip is something you can action with impact TODAY.

Blank page stand off!

We know when it comes to writing about your business (or yourself), finding the words can feel hard. We get it, we've been there...

Questioning ourselves about what we actually do and how we really help.

Doubt creeps in and the blank page stares back almost mockingly, making what should be a quick task, a painfully long and awkward one.

Personally, a blank page for me is not a good place to start. Even as a copywriter I much prefer having a load of notes to edit and craft a story from there.

You already have the golden words!

The great thing is, you already have the notes you need to edit into great copy, we all do.

The golden words that'll resonate with your audience that you simply need to tweak.

Every week we speak to women looking for clarity on their story and how to share what they do with confidence.

During every conversation we help them find that confidence by looking at the words they didn't even write. Taking a moment to take stock of what they already know and what they've already been told makes them great by their clients.

These golden words I'm talking about are all around you...

  • In the testimonials your clients have given you.
  • The comments you've received in your online store or on social media.
  • The messages of thanks and gratitude for the help you've given.

When you stop, look up from doing all the work and look at what you've already got, the words you need are right there. And believe me when I say it makes everything feel better, even on the hardest of days.

I'll show you.

Here's a testimonial we received from a client at the very start of her business:

"Laura and Becca brought so much clarity to the process of taking my idea and developing a firm foundation on which I can build a successful business. The process they took me through really made me think about things in a new way."

We loved receiving this. Not only because we were happy to hear we'd been able to help another woman go after her dream, but also because it reminded us of the value we're adding through our work.

PLUS it gave us great copy to describe what we do using words straight from our client - words we didn't even write.

Just a few tweaks and we can use it as copy as simply as this:

We'll help you find clarity in the process of taking your idea to develop a firm foundation on which you can build a successful business. The process we'll take you through will help you think about things in a new way.

Now, there's so much more we can do with that but it doesn't have to be complicated.

It gets to be easy.

Now you have a go. Take a look at the words your clients say about you and your business and change them so it's all about what you can do for them.

Dig through the emails you've received. Check out the comments and DMs in your Instagram. Look at your WhatsApp and Facebook.

What do people say about what makes you and your business so great?

And if you've got clients but no testimonials, go ask for some! Ask them to give you a quick line about their experience and the impact it's had.

Ideally, make this part of your process and save the responses into a document for you to edit later.

Then, next time you sit down to write about your business you'll have a doc full of great words that speak straight the heart of your dream audience.

You don't need to start from a blank page. Some of the best words are already there waiting for you to use.

Running a business is hard but writing about it doesn't have to be. After all, life's short, let's do what we can to make it magical.

With love,

Laura

Gabrielle Bernstein

I discovered Gabrielle Bernstein last summer, inhaling her book The Universe has got your back while on holiday in France. Since then I've literally read her entire repertoire. I can't get enough of her positivity and make picking an affirmation card the first task of my day.

Marie Forleo

I discovered Marie Forleo at the end of 2019 and devoured her book Everything is Figureoutable in a day. I love her New Jersey no nonsense approach to problem solving and how she's all about the fun. Because we all need more of that.

Mountains

Mountains, I love 'em. I love looking at them, hiking them and the endless possibilities they hold. Our favourite place to explore in the UK is the Lake District, whenever we have a spare weekend or day, we throw the tent in the car and head to the hills.
