Don’t call in MAYBE, you want a heck YEAH or a hell NO.

Stories from Home January 2022 (Smaller)-172

The moment we discovered the art of avoiding MAYBE, everything changed.

It helped align our lives and our business to what we truly desired, rather than what we thought we should want.

When we first started our company back in early 2017, we said YES to everything. Pretty much any job that came our way, we took it on and made it happen, no matter how tricky, challenging or downright ugly. We figured it out and got it done.

For a while it felt incredible: being wanted, our skills recognised, money coming in.

The income we received in those early years felt different to the salaries we’d earned in our corporate careers, in a sense, it was more satisfying. We’d well and truly earned it (with sweat and tears for sure) and were grateful for the arrival of every paid invoice.

A few years in, we were doing great.

We’d built a reputation which gave us more than enough work and to say we were busy would be a huge understatement.

By this point we had a cute little office in the centre of town (which made us feel like a proper agency), were running the PR and marketing for multiple arts festivals and turning around massive copywriting projects on crazy deadlines.

And despite the unquestionable YES whenever work came our way, an unconscious niggle began to ruminate. We were wearing busy as a badge of honour and it didn’t feel good.

But how could we do things differently? How could we increase our income without increasing our workload? And surely that was the point?

Sure, we’d surpassed the so-called magical £100k in annual revenue and were paying ourselves a healthy salary - which felt like a huge success so early into the business - but it had stopped being fun.

We were too busy.

It felt like a grind. An unthankful hustle. And we were exhausted.

Something had to give.

It was time to reevaluate, realign and reroute.

The moment we discovered the answer, everything changed.

Shifting our focus away from corporate consultancy to supporting the clients we felt true connection - female founders and creatives looking to make a positive impact on people and the planet - write about their business with confidence, ease and impact, it was like we’d discovered a whole new world.

It wasn’t an overnight realisation, it took us a while to figure out - to recognise who we were for and the real value we could add - and while there’s been a LOT of work behind the scenes to understand what that gets to look like, the moment we discovered the secret formula, it all became clear.

We stopped saying YES to every job that came our way. We got picky, taking the jobs we wanted and the projects that tuned into our creativity.

No longer did we try to map out a range of offers that were for everyone who could possibly benefit from what we know - instead, we got real with ourselves and created offers for the women we really wanted to work with.

We stopped trying to cram all our knowledge and expertise into a single offer.

And we stopped kidding ourselves about what we thought we should be sharing and tuned into what our audiences wanted to learn from us.

We started listening to our hearts, tuning into our superpowers and the real magic we both already had to offer by the bucket load rather than trying to be like everyone else.

We listened to what our clients, friends and colleagues said makes us special.

We focused on those we knew we definitely wanted to work with and got to understand where they were at and what support they wanted and needed.

We listened to what people were struggling with and the observations we’d made that we knew we could easily remedy.

Then, we made it easy, obvious and shared it on repeat. We helped our audience recognise what was for them and what definitely wasn’t. We made it clear who we’re for and who we aren’t for.

The more we’ve tuned into what feels really good, listened to when it’s a full body YES! Things have felt easier, more aligned and more expansive.

And you know, what? The work has flowed with ease and every client we’ve worked with, every project we’ve work on has felt GOOD. Really good.

It can feel uncomfortable at first and is definitely a practice - particularly when it comes to sales page writing and content creation - but getting crystal clear on who you are for and who you aren’t for is the golden thread your business needs.

Don’t leave your audience wondering if what you’re offering is for them, make yourself magnetic to attract those you want and repel those you don’t.

Because the reality is you can’t be everything to everyone, nor do you need to be to have a wildly successful business and make a huge impact on those you’re there to serve.

When your audience is busy, distracted and being pursued by a bunch of other people wanting to help them, how can you make it clear you’re the one for them? Who do you love working with? What’s it like working with you? What are the quirks they should expect when they sign up for your offer? Tell them! Make it obvious.

For example, if you’re wanting a team to do all the work for you, would rather chuck it over your shoulder and have someone on call to write copy morning, noon and night, you’re in the wrong place.

We’re for you if you want to pour purpose and power into your words, are ready to put the work in with us as your guides and get big, juicy doses of best friend energy every step of the way with a side order of silliness and lots of laughs.

We know we don’t have to be for everyone to make an impact. And you don’t too.

Get clear on your dream clients and write with them in mind. Share messages and stories that will resonate with where they’re at and help them get to know, like and trust you.

You’re creating a beautiful business, be true to yourself and who you want to work with and writing and creating content and copy will be easier, more impactful and way more enjoyable.

With love,

I discovered Gabrielle Bernstein last summer, inhaling her book The Universe has got your back while on holiday in France. Since then I've literally read her entire repertoire. I can't get enough of her positivity and make picking an affirmation card the first task of my day.

Mountains

Mountains, I love 'em. I love looking at them, hiking them and the endless possibilities they hold. Our favourite place to explore in the UK is the Lake District, whenever we have a spare weekend or day, we throw the tent in the car and head to the hills.
